Narrative Assessment Term 2 - Math

Learner: Jeffa                     Learning Coach: Abby Morgan              Date: 12 June 2015
Learning Area: Math
Learning Observed
During our Math workshops Jeffa has been developing his ability to add two groups of numbers together. Before beginning our new learning Jeffa was counting the objects from one to solve equations. As we have progressed he has developed new skills. Today during Math he was using beans and cups to solve equations using numbers from ten. Jeffa was able to place ten beans in one cup and remember this number while counting on the remaining beans. As you can see in the video when he was asked to solve 10+4 he remembered that there were ten beans in the first cup and counted on.This is an important tool to help Jeffa solve addition problems with ease. As we completed more activities around this he was able to develop his speed in solving these equations.
Evidence of learning
Jeffa was using counting on strategies to solve 10+4.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During our Math workshops Jeffa has been developing his Capabilities as identified in the school vision principles. He has been advancing his mathematical capabilities and applying these to his learning. Jeffa has also been working on the Key Competencies of thinking. He has used effective mental strategies to solve new math problems.
Next Learning Steps
  • Help Jeffa to develop his ability to instantly recall facts to 10. E.g. 5+5, 4+6, 3+2 …
  • Assist him in applying this strategy to real life scenarios to identify that practical features of this math.
