Narrative Assessment Term 2 - Math

Learner: Jeffa                     Learning Coach: Abby Morgan              Date: 12 June 2015
Learning Area: Math
Learning Observed
During our Math workshops Jeffa has been developing his ability to add two groups of numbers together. Before beginning our new learning Jeffa was counting the objects from one to solve equations. As we have progressed he has developed new skills. Today during Math he was using beans and cups to solve equations using numbers from ten. Jeffa was able to place ten beans in one cup and remember this number while counting on the remaining beans. As you can see in the video when he was asked to solve 10+4 he remembered that there were ten beans in the first cup and counted on.This is an important tool to help Jeffa solve addition problems with ease. As we completed more activities around this he was able to develop his speed in solving these equations.
Evidence of learning
Jeffa was using counting on strategies to solve 10+4.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During our Math workshops Jeffa has been developing his Capabilities as identified in the school vision principles. He has been advancing his mathematical capabilities and applying these to his learning. Jeffa has also been working on the Key Competencies of thinking. He has used effective mental strategies to solve new math problems.
Next Learning Steps
  • Help Jeffa to develop his ability to instantly recall facts to 10. E.g. 5+5, 4+6, 3+2 …
  • Assist him in applying this strategy to real life scenarios to identify that practical features of this math.

Shadow Puppets

Learner: Jeffa      Learning Coach: Luisa Maloni    Date: 5th June, 2015
Learning Area: iExplore: Shadow Puppets
Learning Observed
We have been looking at shadow theatre on Youtube. We watched a shadow dance and shadow puppets with hands and with paper cut outs. We started by sharing some of the knowledge we have already about shadow puppets and then thought of some questions we had about them. Jeffa was able to share some of the handshapes he knew to make a shadow puppet with a partner and then to the whole group. Then he shared a question he wanted to find out about shadow theatre- Ash said she could make a bird with her hands and Jeffa said  “How?”
Evidence of learning

Jeffa shares his knowledge and questions with the group. I wonder if he likes to ask questions at home?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jeffa can Connect with what he already knows about Shadow Puppets and can Collaborate through sharing ideas and building new knowledge from others (Thinking, Relating to Others, Using Language, Symbols and Text). He extends his thinking by asking a question that he is Curious about.
Next Learning Steps

  • Describe ways he could find the answers to his questions
  • Identify ways he could share or present his findings

Narrative Assessment - Literacy

Learner: Jeffa                  Learning Coach: Abby Morgan              Date: 6 May 2015
Learning Area: Literacy
Learning Observed
I completed the JOST Assessment (Junior Oral Language Screening Tool) with Jeffa. It was great that he was able to correctly identify 10 of the 12 body parts that were shown to him on the picture. He also knew the names of more than 7 animals - all from z the zoo. Jeffa was also able to tell me the functions of all the body parts asked for; ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. He also has sound knowledge of verbs and prepositions (in, on, beside, behind etc). Jeffa enjoyed telling me what about what was happening in the picture.
Evidence of learning
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jeffa is developing his capabilities in using Language, Symbols, and Texts and Thinking. He was able to recall and interpret the questions asked and respond to them. Jeffa is able to verbalise his thoughts and initiates conversations with both adults and children.
Next Learning Steps
  • Use the language of tense - fell / fall, found / find.
  • Use the language of plurals - Bus / Buses, Mice / Mouse
