Narrative Assessment - Literacy - 14 September 2015

Learner: Jeffa                     Learning Coach: Miriam Kamsteeg             Date: 14 Sept 2015
Learning Area: Literacy - Writing
Learning Observed
Today Jeffa was writing with me. He wanted to write “I watched Jurassic World”.
He started off writing “I”, then asked how to write “watched” I told him to sound it out, so he did. He then attempted to write “Jurassic world” by himself and put the full stop in. I then asked him what else he could tell me about it. He decided that he would write “I eat some food”. He started his second sentence, but then ran out of time to complete his story.

Jeffa is writing down many of the sounds he hears. I wonder if he is practising his writing at home?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jeffa is developing his Capabilities in Writing. He is starting to be able to write independently (Managing Self). Jeffa is able to hold an idea in his head and write it down (Thinking). He is writing many sounds (Using Language, Symbols and Texts).
Next Learning Steps
  • Write two sentences in one writing session.
  • Continue to record down all the sounds he hears in words.
  • Share learning with home.

Math Narrative Assessment

Learner: Jeffa                 Learning Coach: Mr Hattie          Date: 9 September 2015
Learning Area: Mathematics
Learning Observed
For mathematics we are learning to subtract numbers to 5 using materials. This is the first step of subtracting. During the lesson we started with understanding what subtraction is and how we subtract. We went through a few problems together using our materials, our fingers. This allows us to manipulate the problem ourselves at our own pace. Jeffa was doing a good job. Our next step for this lesson was practicing using our capabilities that we learnt in a practical sense. We played our addition and subtraction board game, we only did the subtraction part. Jeffa tried straight away to use imaging. This is good that he is wanting to push himself but when he started trying the strategy he started to succeed.

Jeffa was proud that he got the correct answer.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The Key Competencies that was being shown during this lesson is “thinking” as the learners are having to think about the skills that they have just learnt while applying them to a new game. “Relating to others” as the learners were put into pairs as we are wanting discussion around why they have gotten to the answer that they got. “Capable” is the key value that we were using as the learners had to use the capabilities that they had learnt in a practical sense.
Next Learning Steps
Jeffa’s next learning steps are:
  • using imaging to solve subtraction problems to 5.
  • instantly recognising basic facts to 5.
