Learner: Jeffa, Louis, Dhruv, and Ronav                             Learning Coach: Abby Morgan
Date: 10 March 2015
Learning Area: Math
Learning Observed
Today during Math I invited four learners to complete a construction task using the straws and connectors. Jeffa, Louis, Dhruv, and Ronav quickly volunteered to complete this activity. I asked them to have a think and discuss what they would like to build, after a few minutes they had decided to build a rocket! I left the boys to continue to work indepently while I worked with a group, at the end of our maths lesson I checked in with the boys to see their progress. They were proud to show me what they had completed and tell me how they had constructed it.
Evidence of learning
Jeffa, Dhruv, Ronav, and Louis enjoyed constructing their rocket together, I wonder what other materials they could explore?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
While working on this activity Jeffa, Louis, Dhruv, and Ronav were using the school vision principles of being collaborative and curious. They applied these principles through their ability to discuss ideas and accept others ideas. Curiosity is evident in the manner they used the materials and discussed what possibilities they could create. The Key Competencies of Managing Self, and relating to others. To maintain focus and see themselves as capable learners they were managing themselves. For this task to work they had to effectively be able to communicate with each other and accept others ideas and opinions, which they succeeded at.
Next Learning Steps
  • Explore other construction materials
  • Provide a set of instructions to construct another object
  • Share their learning with home
  • Investigate rockets and spaceships during iExplore time

Learner: Jeffa                Learning Coach: Abby Morgan                     Date: 5 March 2015
Learning Area: Literacy
Learning Observed
During iDevelop literacy time Jeffa was using his understanding of the middle sounds in words to complete known words. Jeffa came to show me the words he had created using the CVC cards. He was able to identify the missing letter/sound for 5 different words during our learning time. To complete this activity Jeffa was using his knowledge of letter sounds, their formation as well as word formation. Since this time I have observed Jeffa working at this activity again and is one of interest to him.
Evidence of learning
Great work Jeffa, you were focused and successfully completed the task.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jeffa recognised 32 of 54 letters in the Letter Recognition Assessment and achieved 3 years 11 months on the Oral Language Assessment. During this learning activity Jeffa was applying the Key Competencies of Thinking, Using Language, Symbols, and Texts, and Managing Self. To assist with recalling and decoding words Jeffa was using thinking skills. This activity was Learner directed and self chosen displaying his ability to Manage Self. Jeffa was also applying the Ormiston Vision Principles of capable as he was practicing a known skill.
Next Learning Steps
  • Extend knowledge of high frequency words.
  • Assist in creating a personal word bank.
  • Share learning with home.

Jeffa's Writing

Learner:  Jeffa   Learning Coach:     Caro Bush       Date: 10.03.15
Learning Area: Literacy
Learning Observed
I was working with Jeffa in the SLT office to try and increase the amount of written work he produced. His planning was a picture which he was able to talk about in great detail. Jeffa certainly has a lot of knowledge about caterpillars and butterflies. He pointed to the picture and described in great detail how the butterfly is curled up inside the chrysalis. We talked about what would make a good sentence to record under his picture. Jeffa decided to write “The very hungry caterpillar is asleep.” Jeffa was able to locate the words ‘the’ and ‘is’ on butterfly table tent and write them in the sentence. He could locate and record some of the sounds in the words in the sentence. We talked about how to finish a sentence and Jeffa placed the full stop in the correct place.
On the way out of the SLT office Jeffa excitedly pointed to a card, at the top of the shelving unit which had a picture of a butterfly on it. He told me that it was a Monarch butterfly - which is what he had drawn in his picture.
Evidence of learning

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jeffa scored 32/54 on the letter id assessment and was able to Connect his alphabet knowledge to hearing and writing the sounds in the words in his sentence. (Using language, symbols and texts). He showed that he was Curious about butterflies and caterpillars and is keen to share his knowledge with others (Thinking)
Next Learning Steps
  • Independently hear and record sounds in words
  • Use a capital letter to start and a full stop to finish each sentence.
  • Write two or more sentences.
  • Share his work with home.
